Improving Credit Score and Reports

It is difficult to increase your score over the short run, but you can increase your score over a period of time.

  • Pay your bills on time. Late payments and collections can have a serious impact on your score.

  • Do not apply for credit frequently. Having a large number of inquiries on your credit report can worsen your score.

  • Reduce your credit-card balances. If you are "maxed" out on your credit cards, this will affect your credit score negatively.

  • If you have limited credit, obtain additional credit. Not having sufficient credit can negatively impact your score.
If you know of an error on your credit report, bring it to the company that is in error and find out, if you can, where the error came from and have the reporting party removbe it. The three major bureaus in the U.S.: Equifax (1-800-685-1111), Trans Union (1-800-916-8800) and Experian (1-888-397-3742) all have procedures for correcting information promptly.

CAUTION! Many companies promise to quickly correct or "erase" bad credit reports. Let's drag out another proverb "Throwing Good Money After Bad". No matter what claims are made No One has a magic wand or secret method to quickly "fix" a bad credit report. They don't have a person on the inside that can be bribed to take care of the problem. Some compaines claim to be able to quickly give you a new identity to start with a fresh credit score. Providing false information can lead to fraud charges when a business ends up losing money based on credit given based on false or misleading credit applications.

Be careful when paying for credit repair - if you use the wrong company you will be out that money too! Does filing bankrupcy fix or erase bad credit. NO It stops most creditors from collecting on unsecured debts. Some companies will allow a person with a discharged bankrupcy to start over with limited or secured credit cards.

While a bankruptcy or late payments can lower your score fast, improving your score takes time. That's why it's a good idea to check your score 6 or12 months before applying for a big loan, so you have time to take action if needed. If you are actively working to improve your score, you'd want to check it quarterly or even monthly to review changes.

If you credit score needs fixed - follow the list above and work over a period of a least six months with no new "negative" credit reports. Follow that with another six month "good" period and by the end of two years your credit score will be improved.
